Nitrous Vs Turbo

Though every engine can be turbocharged, that doesn’t mean some naturally aspirated car owners would want to add them to the power plant currently residing under the hood. A combination of power and traction is required to control an engine’s potential and transfer it to the wheels.

One place where you see the turbo versus non-turbo debate is at the local drag strip or race track. Many of the racers have different experiences when it comes to boosting the parts installed.

Drivers who have small displacement motors may choose to include a turbo to get the response they need on a race track when they push their RPM to the limit. These foreign made “rice burners” could never compete against some of the big displacement muscle car motors that you’ll find on the race tracks. Not without adding a powerful turbo to their engine package. This may be the perfect solution for them, but it is not something a big displacement engine owner considers when they want to increase the power and performance, as well as transfer of that power to the streets through the wheels.

The first fallacy of turbos is that you get extra power at any throttle opening. This is false. A turbo compression wheel does not create maximum boost until the throttle is in a WOT (wide open throttle) position for a number of seconds. You may never WOT a throttle around town streets as a turbo would let the daily driver down when it comes to throttle response.

Now that you know the downside of turbo power, you can see why a big muscle car motor might do better with nitrous oxide and a monitoring system for heat. Heat is the number one power robbing component in the combustion engine. Adding a turbo will only add to the build-up of heat inside the combustion chambers. Large displacement motors and pickup trucks are susceptible to these environments more than any other engine. Running hot laps back and forth can generate engine busting temperatures that can be exacerbated by a turbo’s added heat induction. Diesel is also usually used in these vehicles because of the initial power and fuel needed to accelerate these vehicles.

If you have a large displacement drag car that operates on staged nitrous oxide induction, you might not want to add a turbo because it won’t make much of a difference. Turbos are great if the vehicle is able to suitably control the power of the wheels, drive shaft, tyres and the engine.

Purpose of a Cone Filter

Many people install these devices on a regular car without realising that it doesn’t make any difference in their driving performance. The driver would also have to replace the air box that was initially part of the engine. Because this vital part has been replaced, the cone filter is now sucking in hot air therefore the filter needs to be an unshielded cone filter.

The idea is to get as much air into the engine. The more oxygen is present, the more power the car will be able to achieve. That is, in a different type of engine. A larger engine will need to pull in more air because it is bigger and more powerful therefore it requires large amounts of oxygen. A smaller, standard four cylinder vehicle won’t get much use out of this filter because it can only suck in hot air, which is useless to the performance of a car as hot air has a lower oxygen count.

If you are interested in installing a cone filter you have to remember that the only noticeable difference will be the sound the car will make. The performance won’t be increased by a great amount but drivers have claimed that it does make their cars more fuel efficient.

Making sure that the cone filter doesn’t obstruct any pipes and airways is also extremely important. The engine requires oxygen and without constant feed, the system will fail. Lotus Eclat Sports Car

In the basic design of the Eclat, Colin Chapman decided to include an element of practically into this affordable four seater.

The origins of the car were firmly rooted in the Lotus Elite Mark 2, which was phased out in 1983.

Consequently, it had a fastback body styling, which represented a more practical solution for storage in the boot.

In 1973, when the Elite was at the prototype stage, the GRP shell was restyled in such a way that the Elite’s front was retained, but it incorporated a sloping roofline that blended smoothly into a fastback tail in the form of a conventional hatchback.

This creation was initially designated the Elite Coupe but, subsequently, was renamed the Eclat.

The car was in launched in October 1975, with continuous production until 1982.

It was offered in a number of versions, such as the basic 520, which used the aluminium, double overhead cam, 4-cylinder, Lotus 907 engine, linked to a four speed gearbox from the Ford Capri saloon, and a higher final drive ratio than that used on the Elite.

However, in the 522 version, the Ford gearbox was replaced with a five speed unit from the Austin Maxi saloon, and it was better equipped, with such luxuries as air conditioning.

The Eclat was a front engined, rear drive, three door, 2+2, fixed head coupe.

The Series 1 Type 76 model, introduced in 1974, was powered by the 1973 cc, Lotus 907 engine, developing 155 bhp, as used in the Elite Mark 2 Type 75, and fitted with two Stromberg CD2 SE carburettors.

The Series 1 model was phased out in 1980, and replaced by the Eclat Series 2 Type 84, which incorporated the larger 2174 cc, Lotus 912 engine, as used in the Elite Mark 2 Type 83.

This model had a compression ratio of 9.4:1, and was fitted with two Dell’Orto, DHLA 45 carburettors.

However, in order to satisfy US emission regulations, the 912 engine only developed 160 bhp, compared with 155 bhp with the 907 unit.

These Lotus 900 Series engines turned out to be very successful, and were later used in the forthcoming Lotus Esprit.

The Series 1 Type 76 Eclat was fitted with a steel chassis, which was attached to the glassfibre body at the rear.

However, curiously enough, a felt strip was positioned between the chassis and the body to provide a good fit.

Unsurprisingly, in damp climates, the felt would absorb and retain moisture, so accelerating corrosion of the steel chassis.

Since replacing the chassis of the Elite and Eclat Types 75 and 76 sports car was quite uneconomical, then this had a devastating effect on resale prices.

Fortunately, this defect was overcome with the introduction of the Elite and Eclat Types 83 and 84 models, in which the steel chassis was galvanised, as standard equipment.

The yearly production figures for both Types of the Eclat were as follows:

1975 = 16; 1976 = 212; 1977 = 133; 1978 = 258; 1979 = 232; 1980 = 95; 1981 = 25; 1982 = 143; Total = 1,114
